Week 4

This week I was working on the head. First, I planned it to be only an attempt but after everything I have done on it I think I can make it as a final head of my character. It had many flaws, of course, I struggled with polygons so much. The biggest problem for me was extruding the faces, because it often happend that one face was going the opposite direction than the other one. Another problem was the symmetry. After I modelled whole face I found out that vertexes to do overlap, so it is not symetrical at all. Because I had almost whole face, I did not want to just start over again, so I tried to fix it at first and I was successfull.  The most difficult part for modelling was the nose. I had to re-do it many times and once I even found strange vertexes with hidden faces (???) inside of it, so I had to delete whole nose and start again. Week 3

After my character design was approved, I could start modelling. Because I have never done it before, I watched maya tutorials on Lynda.com and youtube. I decided to try to model the body first, to learn how all those polygons work.  Although it does not look completely disasterous, I was not very happy with it. I still don'k know properly how anatomy works so I struggled with knuckles/joints and I was also worried I do not have enough time to learn Maya properly in few monts. I stopped working on it here, because there was something about the arm which Maya did not like and even with my tutor we couldn't really find what, although he kind of fixed it, he recommended to start working on the body again. City of Gup initial research

In this module, we've got a live brief, which is creating animated backgrounds for drama student's theatre play. The play is based on a book called Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salman Rushdie. It was the first time we all did something as a group and also the first time we did work which was similar to real work in our industry. We were all kind of just thrown into the water without the ability to swim, to see if we can learn it. Definitely a  challenging task but we all bravely faced it.  I found it awesome how we were able to sit down, discuss it and easily agree with the plan. We split into three groups, each of them took one of the worlds. There are three worlds in the play, Sad City, Gup and Chup. Mine group got the Gup city, which was the happy, colourful world. Week 2 - Final character design

For the final character I decided to use the Moon Girl as a game character. I think she looks appealing to young people and teenagers, so she would be suitable in a real world simulation game with magical/fantasy elements like, for example, game Life Is Strange. I think making a character which is almost real human is very challenging despite the fact that I am not going to make a photorealistic character.

Week 1 - Character conceptualisation and design

When it comes to conceptual art and creating characters, I am still trying to find what I like, what is "my style". That is why it was difficult for me to decide what to sketch. I started with a creepy-funny-weird skeleton figure, to have some fun at first and to warm up. It is inspired by Kiszkiloszki's character Death Fairy and Jack Skellington. Although I quite like the character, I decided not to continue with it, because I think skull's face can't depict facial expressions as my character is supposed to and it also doesn't have ears. For the next character, I wanted to try something aesthetically pretty and because I like owls, especially barn owl is beautiful, I tried to design a character based on a barn owl. The owl girl has round face with big dark eyes with eyeliner and pointy nose, so she looks like the barn owl.
